Long Live The Local on 100,000 livelihoods
Dear Rishi Sunak,
We, the Publicans of the United Kingdom, are writing to you in support of the Long Live The Local campaign for a Beer Duty cut at the upcoming Budget.
Beer and pubs are two sides of the same coin, serving communities up and down the country. Any tax on beer impacts our businesses disproportionately.
The UK Beer Duty rate is three times the European average, 11 times that of Germany or Spain’s, and our total Beer Duty bill is the highest in Europe.
We know that MPs like yourself understand the economic, social and cultural value of Britain’s pubs and breweries, we also appreciate that the Treasury has offered significant support to our industry throughout COVID-19. However, Beer Duty was unfairly high before COVID-19 and it remains so now. The cut we’re asking for will alleviate a pressure we've been under for a long time, at a time when help is needed most.
The pub and brewing industry already employ almost 900,000 people, pubs alone 600,000, with almost half of pub staff under the age of 25. A 25% cut in Beer Duty over the next four years, would still leave us paying the most Beer Duty in Europe, but will stimulate real growth in our industry for the first time in decades, encouraging investment and creating thousands of jobs when the country needs them most.
We hope you'll consider this when planning your Budget,
Kind Regards,
The Publicans of the United Kingdom
